Do you know that “robot nurses” used in hospitals are given human like form? It’s definitely not the most efficient design. Then why would engineers take all the effort to make a robot look like a human?

Because robots appear more trustworthy and warm when they are given human-like traits. This is where the principle of Personification is at play. And Personification is one of the oldest tools in a marketer’s toolkit.

In today’s Persuasive Design Pattern # 12 we will look at one of the most used and sometimes abused patterns called Personification.

Personification As A Communication Tool
People are hard-wired to identify human traits in non-human things and associate them with ideas related to those traits.

For example : Round faces are perceived as cute and square faces are perceived as tough.
Types Of Personification
Create a mascot (ZooZoo, Amul, McDonalds)
Show human-like traits on your product (M&Ms)
Name your product as a human (Alexa, Siri)

The fundamental idea here is humans trust other humans.
What the hell are these Persuasive Design Patterns?
As cost of advertising is on a constant rise across all platforms, what is going to increase conversion rate is presenting ideas in a way that lead to sales. And a way to do it reliably is what Persuasive Design Patterns is about. Especially patterns that influence human perception. You can explore new design patterns that I update at copatterns.com
